31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies Marathon List 2018

Every horror fan knows that Halloween is more than a one day event.  Halloween is a season.  That is why I wanted to put together a complete list of horror movies for each day of October.  The list is what I call “31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies Marathon List”.  The movies included in this list are some of my favorite horror films ever. The horror movies range from classic horror to horror comedy to new releases. Watching the 31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies list will help get you in the mood for the Halloween season.

October 1, 2018:

Trick or Treat (2007)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: What a great way to start the Halloween season than with Treat or Treat. The Halloween horror movie consists of five interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.

October 2, 2018:

The Evil Dead (1981)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: This Sam Raimi horror classic is sure to get you in the Halloween spirit. Even though I have watched this plenty of times I still jump. The Evil Dead tells the story of Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), his girlfriend and three pals hike into the woods to a cabin for a fun night away. There they find an old book, the Necronomicon, whose text reawakens the dead when it’s read aloud. The friends inadvertently release a flood of evil and must fight for their lives or become one of the evil dead. Ash watches his friends become possessed, and must make a difficult decision before daybreak to save his own life in this, the first of Sam Raimi’s trilogy.

October 3, 2018:

Sinister (2012)

Synopsis: You could watch Sinister or Sinister II. Or maybe binge watch both of them. My favorite out of the two is the first one. Sinister is about true-crime writer Ellison Oswald (Ethan Hake). He is in a slum and hasn’t had a best seller in more than 10 years. Ellison is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims’ home and gets to work. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that living in the house may be fatal.

October 4, 2018:

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: Long before he was Daryl Dixon’s brother Merle Dixon in The Walking Dead, Michael Rooker played the role of Henry in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.   The film was directed by John McNaughton and written by Richard Fire and John McNaughton.

The story is loosely based on two real life serial killers, Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole.  The movie was filmed in 1985 but really didn’t receive widespread distribution because the MPAA rated the film X.  Later on it was awarded an NC-17 rating.  This is probably one of my favorite all time serial killer movie as Michael Rooker really did a great job with the character Henry.  The movie is raw yet not over the top.

October 5, 2018:

The Conjuring 2 (2016)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Though the manifestations are relatively benign at first, events soon escalate in horrifying fashion, especially after the Warrens discover the house’s macabre history.

October 6, 2018:

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: It wouldn’t be the Halloween season if Freddy Krueger didn’t come out to play. Wes Craven’s 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street is a must have on any 31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies List. This slasher film tells the story of a group of teens who are being murdered in their dreams. One, two, Freddy’s coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door, Five, six, grab a crucifix. Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. Nine, ten, never sleep again. And since you can’t sleep, than you might as well watch all of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies.

October 7, 2018:

It (2017)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: The 2017 It film directed by Andy Muschietti is a solid remake of Stephen King’s novel. Bill Denbrough does an excellent job as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.  The film is set in the summer of 1989 when a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shapeshifting monster which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of their small Maine town of Derry. But be careful when watching because they all float down here.

October 8, 2018:

October 9, 2018:

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: When Sally (Marilyn Burns) hears that her grandfather’s grave may have been vandalized, she and her paraplegic brother, Franklin (Paul A. Partain), set out with their friends to investigate. After a detour to their family’s old farmhouse, they discover a group of crazed, murderous outcasts living next door. As the group is attacked one by one by the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), who wears a mask of human skin, the survivors must do everything they can to escape.

This 1974 Tobe Hooper horror film still holds its own today. Leatherface remains a horror fan favorite.  Some of the remakes have been pretty good. Check out the Horrornkill’s Guide to all The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies in the franchise.

October 11, 2018:

The Possession of Michael King (2014)

Synopsis: This found footage film tells the story of atheist Michael King. Following the sudden death of his wife, Michael decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural, making himself the center of the experiment – allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him – in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth. But something does happen.

October 13, 2018:

Scream (1996)

Synopsis:  Nothing says Halloween like this Wes Craven dark horror comedy slasher. Wes Craven re-invented and revitalized the slasher horror genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever and scary, as a fright masked knife maniac stalks high-school students in middle class suburbia. Scream provides both tension and self-parody as the body count mounts – but the victims aren’t always the ones you’d expect.

October 14, 2018:

The Funhouse Massacre (2015)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis: The Funhouse Massacre is a horror comedy directed by Andy Palmer.  The film is about six of the world’s scariest psychopaths that escape from a local asylum.  The psychopaths unleash terror on the unsuspecting crowd of a Halloween Funhouse whose themed mazes are inspired by their various reigns of terror. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

October 16, 2018:

Terrifier (2017)

Synopsis: I am not going to lie. I have mixed feelings about putting this one on the list.  The film is a lower budget indie horror movie which is what the horror genre was built on.  Terrifier is based on a short film by the same name which was featured in the horror anthology All Hallow’s Eve.  The movie follows Art the Clown as he terrorizes three young women and anyone else in his way on Halloween night. The film was picked up by Dread Central Presents and is currently streaming on Netflix.

October 18, 2018:

Happy Death Day (2017)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis:  Think of this as a horror version of Groundhog Day. Tree Gelbman is a blissfully self-centered collegian who wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. As the morning goes on, Tree gets the eerie feeling that she’s experienced the events of this day before. When a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack, she once again magically wakes up in Carter’s dorm room unharmed. 31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Haunters: The Art of The Scare (2017)

31 Days of Halloween Horror Movies

Synopsis:  It’s almost Halloween which means it is that time of year to visit some great haunted houses. This horror documentary which is now on Netflix is a highly entertaining look at some of the haunted attractions around the United States.  The film explores how family-friendly haunted houses for Halloween have spawned a growing subculture of extreme horror simulations. Explore the rise of terror as entertainment by going behind-the scenes and into the lives of Shar Mayer, legendary scare actor, Donald Julson, a traditional boo-scare maze designer, and the infamous Russ McKamey, as he creates his controversial full-contact haunt in his own backyard. What kind of person dedicates their life to turning other people’s nightmares into reality, and how far is too far?

October 24, 2018:

Creepshow (1982)

Synopsis:  A compendium of five short but terrifying tales contained within a single full-length feature, this film conjures scares from traditional bogeymen and portents of doom. In one story, a monster escapes from its holding cell. Another focuses on a husband (Leslie Nielsen) with a creative way of getting back at his cheating wife. Other stories concern a rural man (Stephen King) and a visitor from outer space, and a homeowner (E.G. Marshall) with huge bug problems and a boozing corpse.

October 25, 2018:

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

Synopsis:  The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a documentary style horror film that follows the discovery of hundreds of video tapes of torture, murder and dismemberment. These tape documents a killer’s decadelong reign of terror.  The movie has an interesting history. The film was picked up by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 2008 but was shelfed until 2017.  It’s not clear why MGM would sit on the project for so long. A lot of fans think it is due to the graphic and disturbing nature of the movie which makes it perfect for Halloween season.

October 26, 2018:

Wolf Creek (2005)

Then they find themselves stalked by a brutal killer. As they’re slashed, shot and stabbed, the counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent.
